Herbal workshops

EXPERIENCE A HERBAL, AND AROMATIC SIDE OF KARST

Join us for our herbal workshops. You will get to know about wild herbs, and local herbs you can keep in a garden. We will show you how to use them in kitchen, and give you some advice about how to use them in your personal apothecary. Get to know about how to use wild and local herbs in fancy drinks in our Herbal cocktails workshop, or lear how to forage and prepare a light lunch in our Forage and meal preparation workshop. Herbal cocktails

Join us for workshop, where you will make herbal cocktails, suitable for the season. In this interactive workshop, we will use herbs that can be found in nature, and herbal preserves with which we will conjure up a pleasant warm atmosphere. On the herbal walk, you will see the herbs and learn about them briefly. You will receive printed recipes.

You do not need to drink alcohol to enjoy the recipes and techniques shared in this workshop.

The workshop will take place in an idyllic location right next to the Regional Park Škocjanske jame.

THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU IF:

  • You want to start your herbal journey in a fun way.
  • You have some knowledge about herbs and are looking for innovative ways to put this knowledge into practice.
  • You like to create in the kitchen and want a new challenge.
  • You prefer events in small groups (up to 6 people).

The workshop will be in English language, however workshops in Slovene language are also available.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM (3 – 4 h)

  • Nataša Sivec: short introductory lecture and interesting facts about selected ingredients.
  • Samo Kreft: herbal walk (1 – 1,5 h).
  • Nataša Sivec: mixing 3 cocktails according to recipes. With our help you can tweak the recipes and make non-alcoholic drinks (mocktails).
  • Socializing over drinks and snacks.

A light rain will not stop us! We will take a herbal walk with umbrellas (we have extras).

In the event of heavy rain, there will be no herbal walk but material from the wild will be provided, and we will make some plant based snacks using wild plants.

MORE INFORMATION

  • The workshop will be held with a mininum of 3 and a maximum of 6 participants. We accept applications until the workshop is full.
  • We do not support promoting alcoholic beverages to minors. Therefore only people aged 18 or older (legal age for drinking alcohol in Slovenia) can participate in this workshop.
  • We will walk slowly on mostly flat terrain.
  • Gear required: comfortable clothes, and hiking shoes, sun protection, and water.

Foraging and meal preparation workshop

Walk with us through an impressive carst landscape and learn all about the wild goods you can forage in this time of the year. We will cover edible, medicinal, and poisonous plants in the vicinity of the venue. We will forage for plants to put in a light lunch.

After the walk we will prepare the lunch together, exploring the tastes of the foraged herbs.

The workshop will take place in an idyllic location right next to the Regional Park Škocjanske jame.

  • You always wanted to forage you own food, but were unsure of your knowledge.
  • You are looking for new ingredients to include in your cooking.
  • You like to create in the kitchen and want a new challenge.

The workshop will be in English language, however workshops in Slovene language are also available.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM (3 – 4 h)

  • Samo Kreft: herbal walk, and foraging (aprox. 2 – 2, 5 h)
  • Nataša Sivec and Samo Kreft: meal preparation.
  • Socializing over a light lunch.

A light rain will not stop us! We will take a herbal walk with umbrellas (we have extras).

In the event of heavy rain, there will be no herbal walk but material from the wild will be provided by us. You will attend a talk about desired topic (medicina, edible, or poisonous plants), given by Samo Kreft.

  • The workshop will be held with a minumun of 6 and a maximum of 20 participants. We accept applications until the workshop is full.
  • The herbal walk is slow, but you should expect some incline on the way. Please consider this before applying.
  • Gear required: comfortable clothes, and hiking shoes, sun protection, and water.

APPLICATIONS AND SELECTED DATES

  • The gear required: comfortable clothes, and hiking shoes, sun protection, and water. You will need this for a herbal walk in both workshops.
  • You can cancel registration and get a full refund, up to 24 hours before the event. This is because the preparation for the workshop includes harvesting and preparing materials which need to be purchased / arranged / gathered in advance. If you are unable to attend, you are welcome to transfer your ticket to another person.
  • All meals and snacks will be plant-based and thus inclusive for the widest possible group of people (for omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, people with lactose intolerance, those on a planetary diet, people avoiding cholesterol).

  • We are also available for family friendly events, events for a slightly bigger groups, and event outside of designated dates (bookings in advance).

ABOUT US

Nataša Sivec

Holds a BSc in Biology and MSc in Ecology and biodiversity, and is a culinary enthusiast. She brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion fo nature, along wtih diverse interests in caving, climbing and culinary inovation. She dives into culinary innovation, trying to reduce environmental impact by reducing waste, and choosing environment friendly ingredients. Drawing inspiration from nature, she composes the recipes for our workshop, to make the most delicious potions, that are also nutritious.

Samo Kreft

A master of pharmacy, a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences, and also  a full professor in the field of pharmaceutical biology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana. For 14 years he worked as a member of the “Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products” at the European Medicines Agency. He is a regular guest on national television. Samo is an editor and author of several books including “Modern Phytotherapy,” on 700-pages. With his extensive knowledge of medicinal and edible plants, you will join him for a short herbal walk in the vacinity of the venue.
